When Lizzie Went Back to Church

Lizzie's trial ended on June 20, 1893. She did not go to church on the Sunday after the trial. Charles Holmes, who attended the same church as Lizzie (Central Congregational) when asked by reporters, said that people should not expect Lizzie to be attending things in public just yet; it would be weeks before she probably would.
Lizzie did eventually attend her church. On July 23, 1893 she was seen at both the morning and evening services. Charles Holmes and Dr. Bowen escorted her to her pew for the morning service. The minister that day was Rev. Dr. Michael Burnham. Lizzie had joined the church under his pastorship, and he was in the sea of faces at the last day of her trial in New Bedford. Close friend Mary Brigham accompanied Lizzie to the evening service.
